I was sad to hear of the death of Sir Bobby Robson today and in tribute I thought I’d feature a strip connected with him in the Kit Cupboard.
Rather than the obvious Newcastle or England outfit I’ve gone back to Sir Bobby’s days at Ipswich when he took the unfancied Suffolk side to FA Cup triumph in the 1977-78 season and of course a few years later the UEFA Cup. He was with the club for 13 years in total before moving on to the England job.
This was the kit Ipswich wore in the 77-78 season and in that Cup Final against Arsenal where a single Roger Osborne goal was enough to clinch the game for the Blues. It was the first kit produced for the club by adidas after many years of strips from Umbro. The design followed the typical adidas template of the time and was worn for just one season after which, as was the case with so many clubs at the time, it was updated with a slick V-neck version.
Worn by: Mick Mills, Alan Brazil, George Burley and Paul Mariner.
Worn in: A memorable 4–0 win over local rivals Norwich City as well as, of course. the 77-78 FA Cup final.
